A zombie apocalypse on James St North

Nu Steel’s fourth project had students exploring world issues, and the media manipulation strategies that are increasingly used to divert people’s attention away from them. With the help of, youth researched a range of issues including food systems, global warming, AIDS, and industrialization, and analyzed how they’ve been promoted, framed, and subverted via different forms of media. Their assignment? To create a campaign poster with the purpose of drawing public attention away from real issues, and drumming up hype around a zombie apocalypse instead.

Students collaborated with Hamilton-based photographer Andrew Butkevicius to create images for their posters, shot on a green screen so they could be easily transposed onto whatever backgrounds they created. The amazingly talented Ciara provided the zombie makeup, scaring more than a few James St North residents as our “undead” models hit the streets!

It was an incredible project that allowed students to delve into the issues most important to them, think critically about the media machine, learn photography techniques and improve their Photoshop skills. Let’s hear it for another awesome experiential learning project brought to you by Centre3!
