Sayang (Malay) Adj.dearly loved, darling, to dote
JoJo Chooi-Harley
June 4 - July 2 , 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, June 14 - 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Sayang weaves storytelling, photo-voice photography, orchid water cultures, and printmaking to share a personal autobiographical story of a family.
A series of vignettes are presented to actualize dialogue on the complexities of newcomer/migrant families by decolonizing stereotypical narratives of Canadian Born Chinese. An emphasis is placed on family identities shaped by resiliency, sacrifice, labour, and unity in the face of adversity, and endearing love.
JoJo Chooi-Harley is a self-taught artist currently residing in Hamilton, Ontario. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Social Work from McMaster University (2017). Since graduating, JoJo has been continuing her self-directed artistic practice while working as a social worker in the Hamilton community.
Accessibility
We are partially physically accessible. We have a level entrance leading to our shop, information desk, galleries, washroom and traditional print studio. Unfortunately, we do not have automatic doors or an elevator. We are working toward becoming a physically accessible space in the future.
